[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Liposuction is an incredibly effective plastic surgery procedure, but often one of the most misunderstood treatments. There is a prominent misconception that liposuction, also known as “lipo,” is a weight loss procedure or a way to “get in shape” if you are overweight; neither of these thoughts is true.

Liposuction surgery is a way to target stubborn fat pockets and assist in body contouring. An ideal liposuction candidate is at or close to their target, healthy weight and has been successful in maintaining that weight for some time. Liposuction is not a way to avoid diet and exercise; it is simply a way to help you achieve your ideal body goals.

So, Where Does the Fat Go?

Liposuction is a permanent body contouring solution because the targeted fat cells are removed from your body entirely. Once the majority of the fat cells are removed from an area they do not regenerate, which means that the treated area will look slimmer, toner and shapelier.

It is important to understand that if you gain weight after liposuction, the areas that were not treated will increase in size and therefore the fat will be unevenly deposited across your body. After your liposuction surgery, there will be fewer fat cells in the areas that have been treated. If you begin to gain weight this will cause the fat cells to grow larger across the body in the untreated areas leaving you out of proportion.

Post Lipo: Keeping the Fat Away

Directly after your surgery it is important to follow all of the post-op instructions given to you by Dr. Kole. Ensure you get plenty of rest and restrict your physical activities until cleared by Dr. Kole. You will notice swelling and even some light bruising. Be sure to drink plenty of water and keep to your post-op visit schedule. Once you are back to your normal routine and fully healed you will want to focus on your long-term maintenance plan.

To sustain your new leaner shape after your liposuction surgery we recommend keeping to a healthy diet and consistent exercise routine. Stick to a proper and balanced diet as this will prevent weight gain that occurs with unhealthy eating habits. Begin to incorporate more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein into your diet, while reducing the intake of sugars, simple carbohydrates, and saturated fats.

Eat frequent small meals and try to have larger meals earlier in the day. By creating and maintaining a healthy lifestyle you will be able to enjoy your new physique for a very long time.
