What Is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure that can tighten the loose, sagging skin and overstretched muscles commonly associated with recent pregnancy or dramatic weight loss. A tummy tuck uses surgically placed sutures to tighten sagging muscle tissue and hold it in place for a smoother and stronger underlying structure to support the outer surface of your skin. A tummy tuck also removes excess loose or sagging skin and repositions it to lie smoothly over the muscles underneath, dramatically decreasing stretch marks and other unsightly skin conditions.

How Is a Tummy Tuck Performed?

After the patient has been given anesthesia, Dr. Kole makes incisions in the abdomen to elevate the skin from the muscle and fat tissue underneath, both above and below the belly button, so he can work on the underlying muscle structure. Surgical sutures are placed in the abdominal muscles to repair and tighten loose and blown out tissue. The main abdominal muscles are tightened and the oblique muscles on the sides of the abdomen are pulled in and sutured into place to create a kind of internal corset. Dr. Kole then repositions the skin over the tightened and contoured muscles and removes any excess fat and skin tissue standing between you and a smooth, visually appealing tummy.
