The public demand to undergo elective surgeries to improve their physical appearance is a global phenomenon. A recent survey of plastic surgery procedures done around the world has revealed some interesting trends in what type of work is popular.

The desire to look ‘amazing’ is perhaps a unique equalizer for those across the globe. Not surprisingly, the United States leads the pack with 4,361,867 procedures done in 2018, but Brazil is climbing the list with just over 2.2 million and Mexico in third with a little over 1 million procedures.

Combined, the United States and Brazil accounted for 28.4% of all of the cosmetic procedures – both surgical and non-surgical.

In 2016, there was a 9 percent increase in the number of cosmetic procedures done around the world. This includes an average of surgical and non-surgical procedures with the latter having increased a bit more. The following are a few of the more popular surgical cosmetic procedures performed around the world.

  2. Liposuction – 286,388
  3. Abdominoplasty – 148,801
  4. Breast Lift – 131,208
  5. Eyelid Surgery – 119,784

THE 5 MOST POPULAR COSMETIC PROCEDURES IN THE USA

  1. Botulinum Toxin (Botox) – 1,463,409
  2. Hyaluronic Acid – 763,000
  3. Non-surgical Fat Reduction (Coolsculpting) – 150,764
  4. Hair Removal – 145,507
  5. Photo Rejuvenation – 122,377

Breast Augmentation Is Increasingly Popular

The fascination with having great breasts has resulted in this particular surgery being number one in the most popular surgical cosmetic procedures. Often referred to as a “boob job,” over 320,000 of them were performed in 2018 alone.

It is done either by transferring fat from other areas of the patient’s body to their breasts or through the insertion of implants which is way more popular.

Upper and Lower Body Lift Procedures

Nobody likes having any part of their body sagging with excess fat, skin or both. In the case of the lower body, this can take the form of excess fat around the thighs, which can be downright uncomfortable if the amount of excess fat causes chafing between your thighs.

Then, there is the stereotypical male beer belly with flab hanging down from the gut, which is not exactly attractive when swimsuit season comes around. In the upper body, areas in need of various types of lifts can be flab hanging down under the arms as well as from the neck.

The popularity of all types of lift surgeries, from Brazilian butt lifts to facelifts to breast lifts, lend testimony to how unattractive sagging flab is considered.

Men Getting Plastic Surgery Is on the Rise

As plastic surgery technology advances, surgical procedures get better results with shorter recovery times and non-surgical procedures spread like wildfire. This is causing men to increasingly getting in on the act. Getting plastic surgery used to be exclusively thought of as a female thing, but men accounted for about 14 percent of cosmetic surgery procedures as recently as 2016.

The types of procedures men get tend to differ. Just as increasing bust size is valued by many women, men with so-called “man boobs” want theirs taken in the other direction with gynecomastia being one of the more popular male procedures since it reduces male breast size. Hair transplants, eyelid surgery and liposuction are other popular cosmetic surgeries desired by men.
