Alright fellas let’s talk about those dreaded Man Boobs. Man boobs or gynecomastia is enlarged male breast tissue and is the most common male breast disorder. Man boobs are a source of discomfort and embarrassment for 50-65% of boys and men worldwide.  Having enlarged male breasts can affect how comfortable you feel in clothing but especially how you feel out of it.

Man boobs develop due to various conditions or medications however most commonly it is due to a hormonal imbalance. Enlarged breasts are more common in men over 40. With age, men’s bodies produce less testosterone. Men over the age of 40 also have more body fat, which stimulates estrogen production and breast tissue growth.

So, you have man boobs, but you don’t want them so let’s talk about getting that sexy chest back!!

Dr. Kole Suggests One of Three Ways to Get Rid of Your Dreaded Man Boobs

Liposuction – Good old liposuction will remove the fatty deposits in the male upper chest area through small incisions and a tube to “suck out” the fat. Liposuction has minimal scarring and recovery.

Excision  – Excision involves making slightly larger incisions on the edge of the areola and removing the actual breast tissue as well as any fatty deposits.

The combo Sometimes if the male breast is very large it causes the area to sag and skin to stretch so liposuction alone would only remove the fatty deposits but not address the sagging skin and nipple area. In those cases, you may need a combo to achieve the desired look of a chiseled chest.

So now that you have decided to get that chest sculpted and go shirtless…

Let’s Talk Gynecomastia Surgery Recovery

If you choose liposuction the recovery is quick. Patients experience some mild to moderate discomfort and soreness, which is easily managed with over-the-counter pain medication. In general, patients recover quickly from liposuction and resume normal activities within a few days.

If surgery is the option you choose after surgery most common side effects are pain, bruising, and some numbness in patches of skin near the breast area. This is not uncommon and is usually temporary.

This is usually a same-day surgery procedure meaning you can be home in your bed that night !!! You can usually be back at work in a few days and back to physical activity in 2 weeks (light) and in 4 weeks (moderate/intense).

Dr. Kole recommends you wear a compression vest for about 2- 4 weeks after surgery to have the best results. After the 4 weeks, when you go shirtless, avoid direct sunlight and make sure to apply SPF 50 sunblock to your scars to help prevent hyperpigmentation (darkening) and to ensure proper wound healing.
