Peels & Resurfacing Procedures

In Southampton, PA, Bucks County, PA, a chemical peel can come in three levels: light, medium, and deep. The intensity of the peel determines its level. The deeper the peel, the better the results and the longer the recovery time. To perform a chemical peel, the face must first be cleansed of any dirt, oil, or makeup. Then the peel solution is placed on the skin. The treatment time varies depending on the level of the peel. Our expert skin care staff can help you choose the peel that is right for your skin type.

Light Chemical Peels

Light chemical peels are also known as glycolic acid peels, AHA chemical peels, or salicylic acid chemical peels. Glycolic acid, which occurs naturally in sugar cane, is a common ingredient of light chemical peels. The ingredients and formulation of a light chemical peel depend upon the patient’s specific skin care needs. A light chemical peel formulation removes the outermost layers of skin so that new, smooth skin is revealed. The light chemical peel also stimulates the elastin and collagen production, both of which are essential components to healthy, youthful skin. Good candidates for light chemical peels are patients who have mild skin imperfections and conditions. Glycolic acid peels (AHA chemical peels) are a safe and effective way to improve the look of sun-damaged skin and reduce mild acne scars and fine lines.

Medium Chemical Peels

Medium depth chemical peels contain trichloroacetic acid (TCA), which has been used for over a quarter century. TCA peels have been found to be effective at treating a number of pigment changes, sun spots, and photoaging signs. Most patients experience some degree of smoothing and evening of skin tone after the first treatment. Results are expected three to four weeks after therapy, with further improvements seen up to several months after therapy. A medium peel can also soften fine lines caused by sun, increase skin smoothness, decrease the appearance of acne scars, even skin tone, and increase skin radiance. Medium chemical peels provide more dramatic results than light chemical peels, and they don’t require the extended recovery time of deep peels. Deep Chemical Peels

Phenol peels are the deepest type of chemical peel. They are designed to address more serious imperfections such as blotchiness, coarse wrinkles, and acne scars. Only a single treatment is required. Deep chemical peel recovery is lengthy and can be uncomfortable compared to milder chemical peels, and many patients are not candidates for deep chemical peels. Phenol’s bleaching effect makes phenol peels unsuitable for dark-skinned patients, and they are not recommended for patients with freckles. Patients with certain heart conditions face particular risk from deep chemical peels.

Because of the dramatic, long-lasting effects of a deep chemical peel, as well as the possible side effects, both the physician and patient should use careful consideration before going ahead with treatment. If you are considering a phenol peel, be sure to discuss your medical history with Dr. Kole before deciding whether the treatment is right for you. Phenol peels are performed in our office, under sedation, using local anesthesia. This peel usually takes from one to two hours to complete. After the treatment, the new skin will be unable to tan, and the patient must take proper precautions against possible sun damage after undergoing a deep chemical peel. A phenol peel provides dramatic rejuvenation. After healing is complete, the skin is much clearer, luminous, more elastic, and the appearance of deep wrinkles and severe discoloration is significantly reduced. A deep chemical peel can make you look younger, and the results can last decades without special care other than protection against sun exposure.

Recovery

For light peels and microdermabrasion, most patients experience minimal downtime. For medium peels, slight swelling and redness may occur; however, this will decrease in the following days or up to a week. For deep peels, recovery will take a little longer. The layer of the old peeled skin will crust and fall off, leaving the fresh new skin behind. Specific individualized instructions will be provided to you before your treatment.
