Dysport® is an FDA-approved alternative to Botox® that temporarily improves moderate to severe lines and wrinkles between the eyebrows and the forehead. The targeted area may be numbed before the procedure for patient comfort, but it is usually not necessary. As with Botox®, the procedure is very quick and the patient can return to normal activities immediately following the treatment. Results of a Dysport® treatment may be noticeable as soon as one to two days after treatment – usually faster than Botox®. Dysport® may last up to six months and is one of the most popular non-invasive cosmetic procedures performed.
Dysport® blocks signals from the nerves, allowing muscles to relax and smoothing the wrinkles that they cause. Habitual muscle contractions are blocked, but after a short time the nerve extends new branches to the muscle that allow for voluntary muscle contraction, so you don’t lose expressiveness in treated areas. Many facial wrinkles are the result of nerve cells that have been conditioned to tell muscles to contract. Because we so often contract muscles in the forehead, around the eyes, and around the mouth, the nerves begin telling the muscles to remain contracted.

Physicians were initially reluctant to use Dysport® around the mouth where injections would be needed very close to muscles needed for talking, eating and kissing. This technique, however, has now been perfected to a higher skill level. Tiny Dysport® injections into certain oral muscles can safely prevent the mouth from creasing the skin and forming the deep vertical lines caused by habitual over-pursing.
